In a significant achievement, Nagaland’s Mon district was conferred a national level award for COVID-19 management at the 24th National Conference on e-Governance (NCeG) at Hyderabad on January 7.
The Mon district administration received the silver award for its initiative called Technology in Aid to Administration (TIIA) under the ‘Use of Information and Communications Technology (ICT) in COVID-19 management.’ The gold award in the same category was conferred to Srinagar district in the Jammu and Kashmir Union Territory.
The Department of Administrative Reforms & Public Grievances (DARPG) and Ministry of Electronics & Information Technology (MeitY), in association with the state government of Telangana organised the conference from January 7-8 under the theme ‘India’s Techade: Digital Governance in a Post Pandemic World’. Overall, there were 1377 registrations out of which 26 were awarded in various categories under NCeG.
Technology in Aid to Administration
According to Mon Deputy Commissioner Thavaseelan K, under the TIAA initiative, the district administration introduced a multi-pronged approach with the help of technology to reduce the hardship of people, keep the district safe, and improve the effectiveness of the administrative machinery.
The measures were necessitated due to various factors like the arrival of a large number of returnees from different parts of the country, inadequate facilities in the lone district hospital, geographical constraints, communication issues, and lack of resources, among other things.
Public movement permit, home delivery of vegetables, banking services and water, food bank, online e-pass for intra-district movement, active case search strategy and contact tracing, Walk-In Sample Kiosk (WISK), District COVID App, Clappia App, World Help Group App and Geo Fencing are some of the innovations initiated by the district administration in response to COVID-19 pandemic.
Upcoming technology interventions include introduction of WhatsApp Chatbot in collaboration with Swasth Foundation Team and a Digital Dashboard-Coronasafe Network, according to DC Thavaseelan K.
It may be mentioned that the Mon district administration had, in 2020 and 2021, also received various SKOCH Awards for its response to COVID-19. Instituted in 2003, the SKOCH Award is India's highest civilian honour conferred by an independent organisation as a third party assessment.
