Mon, Phek, Wokha launch HPV campaign to combat cervical cancer

Dimapur, March 1 (MExN): The Human Papillomavirus (HPV) vaccination programme was launched across Mon, Phek and Wokha districts on February 28, marking a major step in the fight against cervical cancer.

In Mon, the programme was launched by the District Health Society at District Hospital Mon. Delivering the keynote address, Dr Wungyong Konyak, District Programme Officer (RMNCHA+N), highlighted that cervical cancer remains one of the leading causes of cancer-related deaths among women and stressed the urgent need for preventive measures.

He informed that the vaccine is currently eligible for girls aged 14 years and detailed the required documentation and uploading of beneficiary details into the designated health application.

Vaccination will be carried out at designated health facilities with qualified doctors and nurses. 

Addressing safety concerns, he clarified aspects related to Adverse Events Following Immunization (AEFI) and assured that monitoring and response mechanisms are in place. He also emphasised strict maintenance of the vaccine cold chain system.

T Olem Konyak, Vice President of KNSK, appreciated the state government and Health department and urged expansion of outreach services to remote areas through camps and mobile clinics to ensure no eligible girl is left out. The programme was chaired by Bangchem Phom, with invocation by David Konyak and vote of thanks by Dr Lily Monyu. Representatives from KNSK, KBBB, Social Welfare Department, private schools, churches and ward members attended.

In Phek, the HPV Vaccination Campaign was launched at the CMO Conference Hall by Akole Vero, President PAMA. Dr Khriekuolie Liezietsu, DPO (RMNCH+N), briefed the participants on the vaccine’s benefits, symptoms of cervical cancer and the global strategy to eliminate cervical cancer. All girls aged 14 years will be vaccinated during the three-month campaign. The programme was chaired by Sedeu Rupreo, DPM NHM, with invocation by Vesivo Chizo and vote of thanks by Zuvutho VCCM. EAC Phek, councillors, line departments and health staff attended.

In Wokha, the vaccination drive was launched at Urban Primary Health Centre by Dr Thungchanbemo Ezung, Chief Medical Officer. He said the vaccine, provided free of cost by the government, aims to prevent cervical cancer and called for collective efforts for its success. Dr Thungchanpeni Patton, DPO (RCH/UIP), said the HPV vaccine was globally introduced in 2006 and that the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare is administering Gardasil 4 free of cost during routine immunisation. Dr Mhonchan N Kithan, MS, District Hospital Wokha, informed that vaccination will be conducted from 9 am to 3 pm. The first dose was administered in the presence of district officials.
