Dimapur, March 19 (MExN): Against the backdrop of various organizations and unions questioning the appointments of constables in the Nagaland Police without open recruitment, more have come out in support of revoking the illegal appointments.
Revoke backdoor appointments: ASUD
The Ao Students’ Union Dimapur (ASUD) on Thursday demanded the responsible authority to immediately revoke the services of all the employees who were absorbed into the Department through “illicit means.”
Taking serious note of the 994 backdoor appointments made under the Home Department, the Union called upon the student community and CSOs to join hands in order to keep a check on such “unprincipled acts committed by those occupying high chairs in the government.”
The Union also encouraged the unemployed youths to learn to stand on their own feet instead of willfully giving in to backdoor means, stating that it defeats the very reason we pursue education.
“There are so many avenues outside the government sector to keep oneself employed if we only learn to open our eyes and see where opportunities lie,” the union statement read.
Reiterating its stand for the welfare of students, the ASUD said that it is ready and willing to go to any lengths until the erring leaders do justice to the aspirations of thousands of deserving candidates spread across the state of Nagaland by revoking the appointments.
Enough is enough: TSUD
The Tenyimi Students' Union Dimapur (TSUD) in a press release issued by its President Rukewezo Wetsah and Finance Secretary, Pechesin Bukh expressed exasperation at the level of illegal backdoor appointments done by “some high handed people in power.”
“Enough is enough!” the Union said and appealed to the good conscience of the ‘backdoor appointees’ to voluntarily rescind their appointments so that everyone gets equal opportunities.
The TSUD also extended support towards the Naga Students' Federation's charter of demand for implementation of the Nagaland Staff Selection Board (NSSB) and appealed to the Government to listen to the voice of the students and youths for justice, equality and tranquillity in the state.
Check all departments: LSU
The Lotha Students’ Union (LSU) on Thursday stated that it opposes any form of backdoor appointment in any government department, but only through a ‘holistic approach.’
“…Recently in some print media, the whole issue is unfortunately being diverted by way of pick and choose approach targeting only a particular department, which exposes apparent vested interest and ill-intention,” the LSU statement said.
In Nagaland, no department is an exception to this menace, it stated, adding that all should be checked equally.
Highlighting the ‘bold statements’ made by some organizations against corruption in the state, the LSU stated that it wholeheartedly supports their statements, but at the same time it felt that the same yardstick should be applied to all the departments.
“While the intentions of those organizations about corruption are relatable, their silence on the other departments is not,” the LSU said.
We cannot choose which evil to fight and whom to call evil, the Union said, adding that the organizations should have fought the issue of corruption on holistic approach and not just pick one department.
Reminding of the Chief Minister’s assurance to set up a committee to look into the matter of existing system of appointment under the police department, the LSU wondered if the organizations are aware of that. “If they do know that and still continues to attack one department, it is biased and intentions become apparent,” the union said.
LSU called upon all the right thinking citizens of the state to fight evils that persist in the society without favoritism or bias.
It also extended support to the demand of NSF in setting up of Nagaland Staff Selection Board (NSSB).
JDU Nagaland calls for ‘wholesome approach’
The Janata Dal United (JDU) Nagaland also voiced against the random appointment in excess of the strength without proper screening tests within the uniform force.
It termed it a serious concern as the personnel of the uniform force are expected to be tasked with security of the people.
This menace of backdoor appointments has been plaguing the uniform department over the last several decades due to factors which are actually controllable, the JDU said.
The Unit Commanders who are the actual appointing authority are always at the receiving ends of the public who do not realise the fact that they also are often in constraints by both their superior authorities and their political bosses, the JDU statement issued by its publicity wing stated.
On that note, Janata Dal United (JDU) Nagaland opined that the recent issue should be taken up from a wholesome approach encompassing the irregularities which has been committed over the last several years since so as to set things right once and for all.
The JDU cautioned against giving tribal colors a way to vitiate the situation and divert the focus from the real issue.
