Dimapur, June 19 (MExN): Several civil society organisations in Nagaland, including the Zeliang Youth Organisation Chumukedima, Zeliang Youth Organization Dimapur, Zeliang Students' Union Nagaland, and the Sumi Totimi Hoho, have issued strong statements condemning alleged incidents of sexual violence reported from Kiphire and Kohima.
The Zeliang Youth Organisation Chumukedima expressed shock over the alleged sexual assault and rape of an 82-year-old woman in Kiphire, reportedly involving Nagaland Police personnel Heluikie Nsanglung Amos. The organisation described the act as a “heinous act perpetrated against a vulnerable and aged woman” and stated that there should be “no clemency for such depraved act.” It urged authorities to expedite investigation and ensure strict punishment under law, while also extending solidarity to the victim and her family.
In a separate statement, the Zeliang Youth Organization Dimapur also condemned the alleged incident, stating that it was “an assault upon humanity itself and an affront to the moral fabric of our society.” The organisation said, “There can be no justification, excuse, compromise, or mutual understanding in matters involving such grave allegations,” and called for the strictest legal action if the accused is found guilty.
The organisation further demanded the application of relevant provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, 2023, including Sections 63 and 64, and called for the immediate suspension of the accused from service pending investigation. It also stressed the need for “fair, transparent, and impartial investigation” and urged authorities to ensure comprehensive medical, psychological, and legal support for the survivor.
Meanwhile, the Sumi Totimi Hoho expressed strong condemnation over two separate incidents of alleged sexual violence. Referring to the Kiphire case involving the 82-year-old woman, the organisation stated that the allegations were “deeply disturbing” and noted that the accused was a member of a disciplined force entrusted with public trust and safety.
The Hoho also condemned another reported incident involving a 40-year-old youth leader from Kohima Village, who allegedly sexually assaulted a 17-year-old girl while engaged in church-related work. It stated that such acts represent “a betrayal to the followers” and stressed that sexual violence “has no place in a civilized society.”
