The Municipal Demand Side Management (MuDSM) programme can help improve the overall energy efficiency of the Urban Local Bodies (ULBs), attendees of a workshop on energy conservation awareness programme were told on Thursday.
Halder expressed optimism of substantial savings in the electricity consumption, thereby, resulting in cost reduction/savings for the municipalities
Speaking at the workshop for stakeholders under the MuDSM held at the Kohima Municipal Council, Kohima on February 6, TK Halder, Sr Electrical Inspector expressed optimism the programme would results in substantial savings in the electricity consumption, thereby, cutting cost for the municipalities
Addressing the growing demand for public utilities due to the rising population which has increased energy demand for the service provided by the ULBs, Halder maintained that the energy consumption of the municipality sector is “characterized by frequent changes and rising peaks in power load curves in the morning hours due to water pumping and evening hour street lighting.”
“The inefficient use of electricity due to limited diffusion of energy efficiency technology and demand side management initiatives has considerably increased the energy spent of the municipalities,” he said.
Thus, the basic objective of the MuDSM, he added, is to improve the overall energy efficiency of the ULBs which can lead to substantial savings in the electricity consumption thereby resulting in cost reduction and savings.
Resource person, Nilanjan Bose from M/s Cenergist Energy Pvt Ltd Kolkata also spoke on the MuDSM programme and the BEE Star labelling programme by giving a brief history on the setting up of the Bureau of Energy Efficiency (BEE) and Kyoto Protocol.
Speaking on the understanding of energy label on electrical appliances, Bose informed the attendees to regularly check on the BEE star label while buying electrical appliances as the standard and label indicates the energy efficiency of the product.
A key objective of the BEE Standard and labelling programme is to provide the consumer an informed choice about the energy saving and thereby the cost saving potential of the relevant marketed product, he informed.
The scheme targets display of energy performance labels on high energy end use equipment and appliances and lays down minimum energy performance standards, he added.
MuDSM is a mechanism to conserve consumers' energy consumption pattern in accordance to the utility's energy production and distribution capacity. It aims to provide cost effective ways to balance electric supply and demand.
The workshop was attended by members of the Kohima municipal wards.
