Naga groups urged to be realistic on ‘tax’

Dimapur, October 26 (MExN): The emergency consultative meeting of Naga apex civil organizations on October 26 in Kohima has come out with several recommendations including one that appealed to the Naga political groups to be ‘realistic’ when it comes to ‘taxing’ individuals and communities. The organizations reminded  that the resentment and anger of the public is foreseeable unless the tax  collection” is ‘evaluated’.

The  consultative  meeting in its recommendations  appealed  to all Naga political groups “to be realistic with regard to imposition of taxes on individuals and business community as we foresee the wrath of the people unless the pattern of tax collection is  evaluated  with all seriousness.”

Also, among other recommendations made by the organizations in the consultations, one included seeking more “sincerity” and pragmatism from the side of Government of India to bring  a  solution to the Indo-Naga problem. Another  recommendation sought the release of “all political prisoners” irrespective of “any Naga political groups”. This, a copy of the resolutions said, would “strengthen both the entities for further political  negotiation.”

The meeting was held under the aegis of Naga Hoho, Naga Mothers’ Association and Naga Students’ Federation over  various  issues “that is confronting the Naga people as a whole.” A copy containing the ‘recommendations’  was  received here today appended by the leaders of the Naga Hoho, NMA and the NSF.

The organizations recommended that a memorandum shall be submitted to the Prime Minister of India “on two points.” The first point of the recommended memorandum stated  “that Government of India  must be more sincere and pragmatic in their approach towards bringing honorable, beneficial and acceptable solution to the ongoing India-Naga political dialogue keeping in mind the Naga people yearning for permanent peace is unquestionable.” The second point of the proposed memorandum would demand  “all political prisoners irrespective of any Naga political groups should be released from the custody of different agencies  under  GOI so as to strengthen both the entities for further political negotiation.”

Further, “following the deferment of mass peace rally which was to be held at Dimapur on October 26, 2010 owing to certain technical difficulties, the meeting strongly recommended to organize the said rally in all the Naga areas/ district levels  based on the above cited perspectives at the earliest.”

The meeting recommended that another round of consultative meetings is to be convened comprising of academicians, politicians, social activists  and  representatives from various Naga organizations to deliberate in depth over the phrase “Inclusiveness” and to bring out “road map/mechanisms” toward  it.
