Naga Rengma Hills National Workers oppose proposal for Kuki Regional Autonomous Council

Dimapur, February 27 (MExN): The Naga Rengma Hills National Workers of the NSCN (IM) on Saturday took exception to the Assam government’s proposal for creation of Kuki Regional Autonomous Council. “This is certain to collide with the interest of the original indigenous inhabitants, the Rengma people,” Joseph Rengma, Kilonser stated in a press release on February 27.

The ‘unjustified proposal’ will heat up the political climate in Rengma Hills, the release cautioned, adding that “Rengma people will never allow Kuki Regional Autonomous Council to be set up in their lands.”

The release also objected to the memorandum submitted by Chief Executive Member (CEM) of Karbi-Anglong Tuliram Ronghang to the Union Home Minister Amit Shah to implement Article 244 (A) to upgrade to the level of statehood.

The Assam government and the center should not take hasty decision, lest more problems crop up, it stated.

“The interest of Kukis or Karbis should not be allowed to override the interest of the Rengma people,” it added and cautioned of a ‘natural repercussion’ when history is not respected.
