Naga SAZ Chairman among detained Myanmar leaders

Following the Myanmar military’s coup that dealt a serious blow to democratic reforms in the country on Monday, reports were received that Chairman of the Naga Self-Administered Zone in Myanmar U Kay Saing has also been detained.

The Myanmar's military had seized power after detaining democratically elected leader Aung San Suu Kyi and President U Win Myint. The top army commander is now in charge and a one-year state of emergency has been declared.

Sources confirmed that U Kay Saing was among those detained, which included 34 key leaders of the National League for Democracy (NLD) party who were detained since Monday morning. It is not clear where they are being held as internet and phone services are limited, sources said.

The military takeover follows weeks of tensions between the armed forces and the government following the army-backed opposition’s loss in the parliamentary elections held in November 2020. The military's allegations of electoral fraud were not backed by the electoral commission.
