34 years on since the killing of Vikhozo Yhoshü and Kekuojalie Sachü, the Naga Students' Federation (NSF) paid tribute to the two martyrs on March 20 today at the NSF Martyrs' Park in Kohima.
March 20 is annually commemorated as the NSF Martyrs' Day to mark and honor the sacrifice of the two martyrs as well as the thousands of students and Nagas who protested 34 years ago against the extension of the Disturbed Area Act (DAA) and the introduction of the Indian Police Service cadre in Nagaland (which focussed on inducting non-Nagas.
Recollecting the March 20 protest of 1986, NSF President Ninoto Awomi stated that the day continues to "renew our hopes and aspirations."
"They are the pride of NSF and we express our gratitude for their sacrifices," said Awomi.
Dr Kevichalie Metha, Pastor, Peraciezie Baptist Church, Kohima in his prayer remembered the incident of 1986. "It was a sad day but also a victorious day for our people," said Dr Metha. Seeking God's blessing that the sacrifice may bear fruit, Dr. Metha also prayed that the new generation continue to value and honor the sacrifice of the martyrs.
The event was attended by the NSF, Angami Students' Union (ASU) and All Nagaland College Students' Union (ANCSU). Wreaths were laid on the graves of the martyrs and a minute of silence was also held in memory of the sacrifice.
On March 20, 1986, students and concerned citizens in Kohima under the aegis of the Naga Students’ Federation (NSF) had protested at the MLA Junction (now Old MLA junction), against the extension of the Disturbed Areas Act (DAA) (the instrument that enables the Armed Forces Special Powers Act (AFSPA)) belt from 5 km to 20 km and the introduction of the Indian Police Service cadre in Nagaland (which focused on inducting non-Nagas). During the protest, the police opened fire at the students leading to the death of Kekuojalie and Vikhozo.
Many others were injured in the incident. Following the killing of the two students, eight ministers in Nagaland resigned.
