Naga women await final court ruling on 33% quota

Kohima, June 24 (MExN): Braving the inclement weather, Naga women representing various tribes’ and organizations gathered at Guwahati High court, Kohima Bench today to learn about the outcome filed by two leaders of NMA on behalf of the Naga Women, seeking implementation of 33% Women Reservation in Towns and Municipalities. The women folk were glad to learn that the judge was convinced about the case and admitted the case, whereby the final hearing has been fixed on 15th July 2011.
Human Rights Lawyer, Mr. Colin Gonzalves of the Supreme Court of India who will the be the Council for NMA, American Lawyers, Dr. Doug Wyatt and Miss Langsingliu both lawyers from supreme court of India representing the Naga women were also present.
Meanwhile, during a telephonic interaction with The Morung Express, Nagaland Mother’s Association president, Abei-U Meru revealed that the case could have been disposed off today itself. However, an unnamed government Advocate present during the petition at Guwahati High Court, Kohima bench, requested for ‘more time’ hence postponing it to July 15. Abei-U expressed confidence that there will a positive outcome at the final hearing.
On concerns raised on the failure of State government to implement women reservation, Abei-U commented that the Amendment Act was made in 2006, but until now, it has not been implemented. “What we are fighting for is our Constitutional Rights” she stated.
