One Khwushopra, aged 53, was sentenced to 16 years of imprisonment after the Kohima District and Sessions Court found him guilty of raping a minor at Chotobosti, Kohima in 2015. The sentence was announced on August 16 by Special Judge Khesheli Chishi, Principal District and Sessions Judge, informed Public Prosecutor Kathu Rengma.
While the incident occurred in late 2015, the victim reported only in the early part of 2016 due to fear and intimidation by the accused. The FIR was lodged by the mother of the victim. The accused was found guilty of raping a minor following two years of trial based on investigation reports submitted by the Investigation Officer (IO) Levinuo Nyuwi, UBSI and from the testimony of 10 witnesses who were examined by the court.
Rengma informed that the court convicted the accused under Section 376 (2) (i) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) for which he was given 1O years of imprisonment; Section 6 of the POCSO Act where 14 years of imprisonment was given, and another two years for criminal intimidation under Section 506 IPC. The 1O years and 16 years of imprisonment will run concurrently, according to the Public Prosecutor. One lakh compensation was given to the victim through the Legal Service Authority of Nagaland.
