Nagaland: ‘Banana plantation in entire State still lays a waste’

Hands-on training on banana fibre extraction and basics on handicraft making held in Phek, Kiphire 


Medziphema, March 15 (MExN): A hands-on training on banana fibre extraction and basics on handicraft making was collaboratively organized by STINER-TFC, SASRD, NU, Medziphema in Phek and Kiphire district on March 11 and 13 respectively. 

Speaking on the concept of banana fibre extraction and craft making, Dr Sentirenla Changkiri, Project Assistant, STINER-TFC, emphasized on the importance of utilizing the rich resources of the region and developing them into economic generating activities. 

Specifically mentioning that “the banana plantation in the entire State still lays a waste,” Dr Changkiri said that “in other states of the country this waste is being converted into various economic and employment generating avenues.”

She said, “This can also be achieved in our State with the right technology intervention and right commitment from our native people.” 

Further, she stressed on mass production of the fibre while mentioning that the State was unable to meet its export demand and how collectively through cluster formation in the region this project can be made into a self sustaining and employment generating enterprise.

The training was focused on creating awareness among the local residents to realize the economic values of the banana plant, the various aveneus that can be generated through it and how STINER as a technology intervention centre can help in bringing in and introducing relevant and need based technologies for the benefit of our people.

Thereafter, the participants were given hands on training on fibre extraction and basics on handicraft making by trainers from STINER-TFC.

In Pfutsero, the programme was chaired by Potsulu Theluo, AO, SDAO, Pfutsero and opening remarks was delivered by Executive Director, CWWS, Pfutsero. While in Kiphire district, it was chaired by T Lemteshi, AC Livelihood, NSRLM, Pungro block and opening remarks delivered by Ripise, BPM, Kiphire.

A total of 31 participants in Phek district and 75 in Kiphire district comprising of SHGs, house wives and unemployed youths attended and participated in the training.

The training was held under the initiative of Prof Akali Sema, Project Incharge STINER-TFC with Chakhesang Women Welfare Society (CWWS) and Nagaland State Rural Livelihood Mission (NSRLM).
