Nagaland BJP leaders in damage control mode

Dimapur, May 22 (MExN): National BJP leaders have assured that it will review and reconsider the Anti-Conversion Bill which was passed in the Rajasthan State assembly recently, according to a delegation of BJP Nagaland which met with the BJP’s top brass recently. 

According to a statement issued by O Mozamo Ngullie, Spokesman for the Nagaland unit, the State BJP led by MC Konyak, president and Dr TM Lotha, Minister of Health & Family Welfare and other executives met with the Leader of Opposition LK Advani, BJP National President Rajnath Singh among others from the high command. The delegation sought clarification and reconsiderations from the central command on the Anti-Conversion Law. The central leaders were apprised of the sentiments of the people of the North East, particularly Christians in Nagaland following the statement made by BJP National president Rajnath Singh. 

“It has been well-understood that the party’s national leaders seem to fully understand the sentiments of the people and they had assured that the high command will reconsider and review the matter” the BJP release informed. It was also clarified that the statement of the national party president was “misinterpreted” and the title misunderstood. According to the statement the leaders assured the delegation that the BJP is only against forcible conversions or conversions by allurement or by fraudulent means, but not against “the normal willful conversion” of individuals from one religion to another as it is a fundamental right of a person to accept and practice any religion as per’s one’s faith.
