Nagaland celebrates World Consumer Rights Day

World Consumer Rights Day under the theme ‘Tackling Plastic Pollution’ was celebrated across Nagaland on March 15.

In Tuensang, the programme was organised by Department of Legal Metrology & Consumer Protection (LMCP) at Baptist Thangyen Higher Secondary School, Tuensang with Judicial Magistrate and Secretary of Tuensang District Legal Service Authority (TDLSA) Kumdilong Kessen and Advocate & Project Assistant TDLSA Soteth as resource persons.

Kessen stated that the world is currently facing a major plastic crisis. He said plastic has gone from being one of the greatest inventions of the modern era to one of the most challenging materials to manage. “Plastic is a highly useful material in our everyday lives, but our consumption and production of plastics, especially single-use plastic, have become unsustainable,” he added.

Resource person Soteth apprised the gathering on consumer rights and also explained how one can file complaints to the district, state or central forum. While encouraging every consumer to be aware of their rights, he also cautioned them to use exercise their rights in a responsible manner. 

Earlier, the programme was chaired by Honglin Shiu, Assistant Teacher Baptist Thangyen Higher Secondary School, Tuensang and welcome address was delivered by Angelish, Principal Baptist Thangyen Higher Secondary School, Tuensang.

An essay writing competition was also held on the topic ‘Consumer Rights and Duties’ in which consumer clubs from six schools participated. Assistant Controller, LMCP C Chullen Chang handed out the prizes to Rarish Ahmed of Baptist Thangyen Higher Secondary School who came first, L Khumdila Sangtam of St Joseph School and Geo Sahi of Holy Angel School who came second and third respectively. Along with the three winners who received cash prizes of Rs 5,000, Rs 3,000, and Rs 2,000 respectively, 14 consolation prizes of Rs 500 each were also given out.
Later, vote of thanks was delivered by Er Yemjong, Inspector, LMCP, Tuensang.

Zunheboto: At the VDB Hall in Zunheboto, various civil society organisations, public leaders, etc., witnessed the launch of Consumer Rights Organisations (CRO) Zunheboto Division during a programme organised in collaboration with the Zunheboto District Legal Service Authority (ZDLSA). 

Public Prosecutor Khetoholi Yeptho who was the guest speaker, highlighted on the Consumer Protection Act and explained how consumers can exercise their rights. She also encouraged consumers to check expiry dates, ask for receipts, etc., while purchasing goods, and make use of legal redressal forums if they face any problems while filing complaints. 

DC Zunheboto Peter Lichamo meanwhile congratulated the newly formed CRO Zunheboto and urged them to coordinate with the Zunheboto Town Council and Zunheboto Chamber of Commerce and Industry to ensure that consumer rights are not violated in the district.

State CRO President James Jungio also spoke on the occasion and highlighted on the activities of the organisation. He said that the CRO Nagaland has tied up with Nagaland State Legal Services Authority with the sole objective to eradicate corruption in the society.

Kohima: The Kohima Law College, Nagaland Voluntary Consumers’ Organisation (NVCO) and Association of Kohima Municipal Wards Panchayat (AKMWP) held a joint programme in Kohima with NVCO President Kezhokhoto Savi as speaker. 

On the occasion, AKMWP President Neibule Kiewhuo appealed consumers to come forward and submit their grievances to association which represents citizens of KMC jurisdiction. 

Savi meanwhile explained the provisions of the Consumer Protection Act, 2019 and called on the gathering to become vigilant consumers who contribute towards reducing the problem of sub-standard, defective goods, deficiency services, adulteration, unfair trade practices, etc.

Stating that consumer education has become an important aspect of life, Savi encouraged the gathering to utilise the six consumer rights protected under the CPA 2019—the Right to safety, Right to Information, Right to Choice, Right to be heard or Right to representation, Right to seek redressal and Right to Consumer Awareness.
