Nagaland Chief Minister mourns death of Justice Zelre Angami

Kohima, December 20 (MExN): Nagaland Chief Minister Neiphiu Rio today mourned the death of Justice Zelre Angami, Retired Judge of Gauhati High Court, who passed away on December 20. He was 76. 

Justice Zelre was a sincere, diligent, honest and knowledgeable man and was much respected by all, Rio said in a condolence message, informing that he had served the Government of Nagaland in various capacities with dedication and excellence. 

“He always advocated the performance of duty with integrity and justice, and expected the same from his colleagues and subordinates,” it said. 

“In his demise we have lost one of the most versatile members of the legal fraternity. The emptiness created by his passing away will be immensely felt by all….Let us celebrate his life by treasuring the wonderful legacy he has left behind,” it added. 

“In this hour of grief, my family joins me in conveying our deepest condolences to the bereaved family members. It is our earnest prayer that Almighty God will give them courage and comfort to bear the irreparable loss,” the Chief Minister further condoled. 

Born in May 1, 1946 in Khuzama Village, Justice Zelre studied M.A (Economics) & LLB from Dibrugarh University and enrolled as an advocate of the Bar Council of Assam, Nagaland, Mizoram, etc in 1972. 

Later, he was appointed as Junior Government Advocate and Public Prosecutor for the State of Nagaland from 1977-1981, Standing Counsel and Public Prosecutor from 1981-1983 and Senior Government Advocate and Public Prosecutor from 1983-1988. 

Justice Zelre later served as the Joint Legal Remembrancer and Ex-Officio Joint Secretary from 1988-1991, Addl. Legal Remembrancer and Ex-Officio Addl. Secretary from 1991-1995 and Legal Remembrancer and Ex-Officio Secretary from 1995-2003 under the state Government of Nagaland.

He was appointed as Additional Judge, Gauhati High Court from March 22, 2006, and as permanent Judge of Gauhati High Court from March 25, 2008. 

After his retirement, Justice Zelre was appointed as the Chairman of 1st Nagaland State Finance Commission, President of Nagaland State Consumer Disputes Redressal Commission and the Chairman of NSA Advisory Board for the State of Nagaland.
