Nagaland Chief Minister Dr Neiphiu Rio on Thursday called for renewed dedication to humanitarian cause and involvement of young people whom he described as the ‘torchbearers of empathy’ and the future of the Red Cross in the State.
Speaking at the Indian Red Cross Society (IRCS) Nagaland State Branch 38th annual general meeting ceremonial function at Red Cross Complex, he encouraged the members and volunteers to continue their noble work “in the true spirit of service and humanity.”
Reflecting on the society’s journey since its inception in 1982, CM Rio, who is also the vice president of the IRCS Nagaland, described the State branch as “a beacon of hope, compassion and voluntary service.”
Further citing the theme for World Red Cross and Red Crescent Day 2024, “Keeping Humanity Alive,” he said that the theme carried deep significance in today’s world, where communities face natural disasters, conflicts, pandemics, and social challenges.
“The Red Cross reminds us that humanity remains our greatest strength. It is through acts of kindness, empathy and voluntary service that we sustain the very essence of being human,” he reminded.
Terming the theme as more than just a slogan, CM Rio asserted that it is “a call to action, to stand with those in needs, to comfort those in distress, and to serve without discrimination.”
The Chief Minister also paid tribute to the late Governor and President of the IRCS Nagaland State Branch, La Ganesan, who passed away on August 15, 2025.
He recalled the late Governor’s “guidance, compassion and unwavering commitment to humanitarian causes” adding that his leadership had greatly inspired the Red Cross family in the State.
He also commended the General Secretary, Akhale Vizol Khamo’s leadership and dedication, noting that her exemplary service had been recognised with the National Indian Red Cross Society Award Certificate of Appreciation for Women (2022–23).
“This honour is not only a personal achievement but also a testament to the collective spirit and effort of the Nagaland State Branch,” he added.
CM Rio also expressed his appreciation to all members and volunteers of the IRCS Nagaland for their “selfless service and enduring spirit” and expressed hoped that the 38th Annual General Meeting would “inspire everyone to continue their journey with renewed zeal to touch lives, to heal, to serve and above all, to keep humanity alive.”
Earlier, the Chief Minister also released the annual report 2024-2025 and partook in the ceremonial lamp lighting.
During the business session held in the morning, district updates and review were presented with Dr Ngangshimeren as the moderation, future plans and discussion by Abou Mere and Red Cross and disaster management coordination by Dr Johnny K Ruangmei.
