Nagaland Chief Minister Neiphiu Rio has strongly condemned recent racial and physical attacks targeting women from India’s North-East, calling them “reprehensible” and asserting that such actions have no place in society.
“I strongly condemn the racial & physical attacks on women from the Northeast, including the incident of a woman from Nagaland. Such acts are reprehensible & have no place in society,” CM Rio said in a statement shared X.
He further asserted that India’s unity in diversity must be “upheld through tolerance, compassion, & respect for dignity.”
The Chief Minister’s remarks come amid renewed concerns over racially motivated incidents against people from the North-East, including a disturbing case in Gorakhpur and another in the national capital.
Nagaland Health & Family Welfare Minister P Paiwang Konyak has also condemned the incident stating, “Racism and violence against women are utterly unacceptable and have no place in our society.” He added, “We stand in solidarity with the victim. Justice must be swift and decisive, the minister posted on ‘X’ platform.
In Gorakhpur, as per reports, three men have been arrested in connection with an alleged racial harassment, stalking and assault incident involving a third-year resident doctor from Nagaland at the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), Gorakhpur on February 22.
She was allegedly followed for about 1.5 km and subjected to racial slurs and obscene remarks, and physically intimidation near the institute gate.
Police confirmed the arrest of the third suspect after two others were taken into custody earlier in the probe.
Separately in South Delhi’s Malviya Nagar, three young women from Arunachal Pradesh reported being subjected to racial abuse and derogatory verbal attacks by their neighbours during an altercation over minor home repairs on February 20. As per reports, a First Information Report (FIR) has been lodged in connection with the incident, which came to light after a video surfaced on social media on Sunday.
The incidents drew widespread condemnation from civil society and political leaders who have called for swift legal action and measures to ensure the safety of members of the region living and working outside their home states.
