Nagaland Cong President rebuts NPF counterpart

DIMAPUR, APRIL 6 (MExN): Reacting to NPF President Dr Shürhozelie’s press statement wherein he had expressed his opinions on the issue of the ‘Office of Profit’, “but asked others to refrain from expressing their views,” NPCC President Hokheto Sumi today said sensible persons concerned over the issue have been expressing their opinion referring various judgment orders. “However, the NPF President instead of welcoming more constructive suggestions is trying to deprive the people of their constitutional rights to express their views.”

Further, the NPCC outrightly rejected the allegation of having submitted a petition for disqualification of Chief Minister and also petition for disqualification against any DAN MLAs on ‘office of profit’ as claimed by Dr. Shürhozelie.

Hokheto said “it is unbecoming of a senior leader like Dr. Shürhozelie to restrict others from expressing their views and opinions on the issue, which has not only affected the Nagaland Legislative Assembly but the entire country’s democratic set up.”

The Nagaland State Legislature Members (Removal of Disqualification) Act, 1964 is a matter of interpretation and we should allow the people to ventilate their views when it concerns everyone, he said. The Advocate General’s interpretations of the Act “cannot be taken as the Gospel truth as he has acted as per the rules of the Nagaland Legislative Assembly, besides there are also other legal experts who will be interpreting the same Act in the court of law if needed,” the NPCC President said in a release.

“The voice of the people is supreme to maintain a healthy democracy and the NPCC appeals to all concern to express their views/opinions freely and fearlessly in issues which concerns peoples’ interest.”
