KOHIMA, AUGUST 14 (MExN): The Nagaland Pradesh Congress Committee (NPCC) and its district units organized a Candlelight March at Congress Bhavan here and across all District Congress Committee (DCC) offices in the state on August 14, joining nationwide protests against the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls in Bihar.
The march, held in solidarity with Congress workers across India, condemned the ongoing SIR exercise, alleging it “undermines the democratic principles of free, fair, and inclusive elections, which form the cornerstone of our Constitution.”
In a statement, the NPCC accused the Election Commission of India (ECI) of enabling a “politically motivated, designed to manipulate and distort the voter lists, thereby disenfranchising legitimate voters while favoring vested political interests.” It added that this “action sets a dangerous precedent that could compromise the credibility of the Election Commission and the sanctity of the electoral process.”
Demanding an immediate halt to the SIR, the NPCC urged the ECI to ensure future revisions follow broad consultations, adequate safeguards, and strict adherence to the model code of conduct and constitutional norms.
