Nagaland cooperative societies & their impact

Several Cooperative Societies in Nagaland are exceptionally doing well with the state’s cooperation department guiding them towards a sustainable economy.  

According to Nagaland Economic Survey 2016-17, a total of 7,990 cooperative societies were in existence in Nagaland and registered with the government.  

The report stated that Nagaland being a state where economic activities are concentrated only in small scale, the role of primary cooperative societies have gained importance.  

In the recently concluded 65th All India Cooperative Week celebration in Kohima, three cooperative societies under Kohima district shared success story.  

PAR MPCS Ltd Kenuozu, Kohima

Formed in 1998 with initial investment of Rs. 5000, today they have seemingly turned into sustainable Society.  

Consisting 37 members at present, this Society is into weaving traditional handloom. They deals Mekhala, shawl, coat, bags etc.  

This Society also encourages others especially housewives and college going students to work part time in their unit to earn on wage system.  

From this, some even earn upto Rs. 5000 in a month. This Society is now planning to set up a Training Centre.  

As part of Corporate Social Responsibility, the members use to offer food items to Kohima Orphanage Home and Old Age Home.

Vitho Industrial CS Ltd Sechü Zubza

Set up in 2002, the members engaged in making handicraft and wood carving.  

Their products have now landed in the Hornbill Festival of Nagaland and North East Expo on several occasions. Through the state’s cooperation department, the members availed exposure trips on several occasions and use to upgrade their skills. They have been to Delhi, Mumbai, Kolkata, Rajasthan etc.  

This Society, once, got an award during North East Agri Expo. They also use to open door to other unemployed youth and enable them to earn from their unit.  

They are now planning to purchase a heavy duty machine as part of expansion of their activity.  

Tuophema MPCS Ltd Tuophema

Registered in 1989, the members, primarily from family circle had started piggery project with Rs. 5000. However, finding the profit margin not upto satisfactory in this venture, they have shifted to orange farming in 2001. In addition, they also cultivate ginger. Today, they are quite satisfied with the present venture and are now planning to expand the orange farming area.
