Nagaland COVID-tally inches towards 8,000

Dimapur, October 19 (MExN): Amid apprehensions that the COVID-19 transmission trend is shifting from local to community, Nagaland recorded another 137 new cases on Monday, taking the state’s tally closer to the 8000 threshold.

Of the new cases, Dimapur recorded 114 cases, Kohima 19, Mon two, while Tuensang and Kiphire recorded one case each.

The daily bulletin issued by the Integrated Disease Surveillance Programme (IDSP) of the State Health and Family Welfare Department also indicated 66 new cases of recoveries as of 3:00 pm, October 19.

A total of 33 recovery cases were said to be from Dimapur while 13 were from Kohima.

With this, the total number of cases recorded in the state since May 25 now stands at 7,953 with 6,207 recoveries and 1,652 active cases.

While 1,581 active cases are asymptomatic, 51 cases are reported to be mild symptomatic, 11 are ‘moderate on oxygen,’ five are ‘severe on oxygen,’ one is in Critical-ICU with oxygen and three cases are on ventilators, according to the IDSP bulletin.

Segregation of cases: Of the new cases on Monday, 70 were attributed to the ‘traced contacts,’ category that has seen significant rise in the last few weeks.

In its latest weekly COVID-19 report, released on October 17, the IDSP stated that the percentage of traced contacts among confirmed cases had increased from 7% in July to 56 % by mid-October.

“This indicates shift of cases towards the community,” it cautioned.

Meanwhile, with 59 new cases, the armed forces/security personnel still lead in case contribution with 45 %  (3,536) of the total confirmed cases in the state. However, Monday’s data indicated that overall contribution of traced contacts stood at 29 % with 2,423 cases.

Six new cases were added to the tally of returnees/travelers which stood at 21 %  (1,607) and there were two new cases among front line workers category which accounted for 5 % (387) of the overall case contribution.

As of Monday, Mokokchung had 58 cases, Mon (57), Tuensang (35), Peren (24), Zunheboto (7), Longleng (3), Phek (1) and Kiphire (1).

According to the bulletin, Wokha is the only district without any active cases at present.
