Kohima, August 7 (MExN): Director General of Police (DGP) Nagaland, Rupin Sharma, has issued a stern warning to police personnel against consuming alcohol while in uniform or in public.
Any officer found inebriated under such circumstances will face severe disciplinary action, including suspension from service if found guilty of such misconduct, stated a circular from the DGP.
It would also negatively impact annual increments, promotions, and career progression, it added.
The circular emphasised that the DGP office was office is in receipt of complaints of police officers consuming alcohol while in uniform and stressed that such behavior not only constitutes misconduct but also severely damages the reputation of the police department.
Accordingly, it directed for strict compliance with the circular.
Earlier, in September 2023, DGP Sharma has issued the final warning to the State's cops on the issues of drug abuse, trafficking, and alcoholism.
'This is the last warning for those personnel assisting in drug trafficking,' he then asserted during a live stream on Facebook.
He further stated that police personnel, from bottom to top-level, would be shown "no mercy" and penalised with ‘sukha’ discharge – the informal term for forced premature retirement without any benefits, if found guilty.
The problems of drug abuse and alcoholism are also becoming "alarming," the DGP further noted and issued a "final warning" that those personnel who drink or 'take drugs' will be taken out of the service. An earlier warning was issued seven months ago, and therefore, there will be no leniency, he added.
Later on September 27, he informed a press conference that 43 police personnel have been placed under suspension or penalised according to the gravity of the offence till date.
Out of this, 23 personnel were given quantum of punishment of the NDPS Act, with compulsory retirement for one, while seven dismissed from service.
Nine were awarded stoppage of yearly increment, three with one year increment down, some demoted, among others.
