Nagaland: Female electors overtake male in combined roll for first time

Female electors have outnumbered male electors in Nagaland’s combined electoral roll for the first time in the recent statewide roll revisions, after service electors are included.

The draft electoral roll prepared under the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) records 6,83,462 female electors against 6,80,747 male electors, giving women a lead of 2,715. The total draft roll stands at 12,06,457, comprising 11,99,456 general electors and 7,001 service electors.

While female electors had already outnumbered male electors among general electors in recent years, the overall balance had remained tilted towards men as service electors are overwhelmingly male.

In the present draft, there are 6,883 male service electors against 118 female, a difference of 6,765. 

However, the 9,480 female lead among general electors, with 6,83,344 females against 6,73,864 males, has now offset the male advantage among service electors, putting female electors 2,715 ahead in the combined roll.

This was not the case in previous counting. In the final roll published in January 2025, female general electors numbered 6,72,395 against 6,65,489 males, but the service category had 7,196 males and only 114 females. 

Consequently, the combined electorate remained marginally male-dominated at 6,72,685 males and 6,72,509 females, a difference of just 176.

The final electoral roll with January 1, 2024 as the qualifying date also reflected the same pattern. The roll had 13,08,848 electors -6,48,396 male and 6,52,693 female general electors, plus 7,647 male and 109 female service electors. The 43-Tapi Assembly Constituency was excluded in the e-roll.

The SIR draft thus marks a reversal in the combined gender balance.

Third-gender count falls to zero
Meanwhile, the SIR draft records no elector under the Third Gender category, a notable change from the first such entries in Nagaland’s recent electoral rolls. 

In Nagaland, the October 2024 draft roll recorded two Third Gender electors, which increased to three in the final roll published in January 2025. The 2026 SIR draft, however, records zero. Third Gender option was included by ECI in 2014.

The CEO’s press note does not explain the change. However, the zero figure cannot by itself establish permanent deletion or exclusion and electors whose names are absent from the draft can file claims during the September 20 to October 20 claims and objections period.

The final electoral roll is scheduled for publication on November 22, 2026.
