Dimapur | August 1
The Dimapur District administration and District Disaster Management Authority (DDMA) have issued a flood alert to low lying areas in Dimapur district.
With the expectation of more rain over the next two days, Dimapur DC and DDMA Chairperson, Sushil Kumar Patel, has asked Dimapur citizens living in low lying areas to be alert in the face of heavy rainfall. “They should move to higher ground if the downpour is too heavy,” alerted Patel today.
Low lying areas of Dimapur include Diphupar (A, B, L & K), Chekiye, Middle Colony in Purana Bazar, Kirha, Netaji Colony, Half Nagarjan, New Colony in Burma Camp, Dhobi Nala, New Market, SM Colony, Sachu Colony, Bank Colony, Walford Colony and Burma Camp.
These areas were witness to incessant rains in the ensuing night of July 31 and August 1. 1500-1600 households were affected by flooding due to the monsoon rains.
Informing this, Dimapur DC Sushil Kumar Patel said that the district administration and its officers went to work from 7:00 am Wednesday morning to check damages.
“1500-1600 households in 13-14 different locations in Dimapur and Chumukedima have been affected due to monsoon rains and flooding. This has been reported to the Nagaland State Government,” said the Dimapur DC. Shelter has also been provided to 8-9 people from Middle Colony in Purana Bazar for couple of days in the Panchayat Hall due to flooding of their houses.
The State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) was deployed in these areas to clear drains and assist people. The Dimapur Municipal Council and the Dimapur Police were also mobilized today for clearance of roads, traffic regulation, law and order and assistance in case of casualty.
With the expectation of more heavy monsoon rains today and tomorrow, the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) has also been requisitioned which is set to arrive in Dimapur soon, and will be sent across to whichever part of the State they may be required.
The flooding was caused due to heavy rainfall in the ensuing night of July 31 and August 1 even in Kohima and Peren districts “leading to huge water discharge in a very short period of time,” said Patel. Dimapur Town’s “narrow drainage” did not help the situation leading to the flooding of low lying areas. The district administration also cleared drains in a few areas like Chekiye village and Dimapur Civil Hospital.
While classes in some schools were reportedly cancelled due to the flooding, there were no road blockages in Dimapur.
“All our officers are on the job and ready to act in case of flooding in low lying areas. We have also spoken to the GBs of these areas to remain vigil in case of heavy rains and move to higher ground if needed,” said the Dimapur DC.
