Around 500 students from different parts of Nagaland have gathered to participate in this year’s Walu Aten which is being held with the theme ‘to renew and strengthen each other.’

Asangla Imti, Secretary to the Government of Nagaland, Health & Family Welfare graced the December 27 morning programme as the chief guest. On arrival, she was received by the Cultural Club Khensa.

Sharing concerns about the ‘deteriorating quality of society in Nagaland,’ Asangla Imti in her address stated that “good governance is the need of the hour.” She reflected that ‘Nagas were known for bravery, honesty, and brotherhood by the developed countries like the Americans.’ She called upon the gathering to review if any of these values are being practices in today’s time.

Maintaining there is rampant prevalence of tribalism and corruption in all sections of the community, Asangla Imti exhorted that ‘every individual should try to be a changemaker to bring a difference in the society.’

‘Individual renewal is of utmost importance’

Earlier, basing on the theme, Asangla Imti in her address told the gathering that there are three categories to renew and strengthen as a whole - society, community, and individual renewal.

“Individual renewal is of the utmost importance if change needs to be seen overall,” she opined and urged the students to examine and know every individual’s capacity.

“There are various avenues and opportunities around and we should know to seize the moment,” she asserted.

Exhorting the students present, Asangla Imti encouraged them to get clarity of what they wants in life and to keep that as the top most priority to progress in every endeavour. She advised the students to stay humble and put God first “as we are nothing without God” and added, “as we are going to run against the wind, one’s presence of mind should be constantly in check.”

She emphasised that being good is not enough and one should excel above the rest.

“One should set goals and have clear vision. To achieve one’s goal, you have to set boundaries and to avoid unhealthy pleasures in life. One should also know when to say yes or no, or else it is difficult to seize the moment,” she stated.

The chief guest also asserted that one should have a positive mindset to face the cycle of life and must be ready for any hurdles and consequences. “When one develops a negative mindset, it is easy to end up in depression,” she remarked.

Khensa Village Council, Chairman, Imtitoshi exhorted the gathering to ‘keep their identity intact.’ While urging to have a sense of pride about one’s village and mother tongue, he said, “As we celebrate it (Walu Aten), we should be able to showcase our achievements, past and current , and seek to bring out the best in the future.”

KSU, President, Temsuakum Longchar welcomed the gathering. The formal function was followed by unit presentations, flagging off of Walu Aten race, indigenous event competitions etc.
