Integrated Molecular Diagnostic and Research Laboratory (BSL-2) at the District Hospital, Tuensang was inaugurated by Minister of Health and Family Welfare S Pangnyu Phom on August 28. Advisor, IPR, SCERT, VG and District Task Force i/c Toshi Wungtung, and Advisor, Prison, Printing and Stationary Haiying also attended the inaugural.
Addressing the inaugural Minister Pangnyu said, “This laboratory will not only cater to Tuensang but also its other neighbouring districts and some part of Myanmar. I am confident that the people of Tuensang along with the District Hospital and CMO staff will do justice in serving our people.”
He stated that, “A BSL-2 is meant not only for the diagnosis of COVID-19, it can be used to diagnose other diseases such as TB, HIV etc which has a high incidence in this region like Eastern Nagaland. So, with the facilities given to you I believe you can do the viral load of the various diseases instead of sending to the outside of the state.”
Dr Kevichusa Medikhrü, Mission Director, NHM stated that completing in a record time of nearly one and half month, around Rs 5 crore was spent on the construction of the laboratory, its equipment and consumables. He reported that five extra rooms were constructed for other future research purposes.
Advisor Haiying and Toshi Wungtung also delivered short speeches while the programme was chaired by Dr I Moatemjen, Chief Medical Officer, Tuensang.
The BSL-2 laboratory in Tuensang is the third such laboratory in the state. The first laboratory (BSL-3) was commissioned on May 31 at Naga Hospital Authority Kohima, followed by another (BSL-2) at the Christian Institute of Health Sciences and Research, Dimapur on June 27.
