Nagaland: MLA T Torechu is no more

State Funeral on December 17, 11:00 AM at Local Ground, Pungro Town

DIMAPUR, DECEMBER 16 (MExN): Member of the Nagaland Legislative Assembly (NLA), T Torechu representing 60 Pungro Assembly Constituency, Kiphire district passed away on Monday morning at CIHSR Hospital in Dimapur after a prolonged illness. He was 73 and is survived by 6 sons and 1 daughter.

Late Torechu had contested election in the NLA seven times since entering the electoral politics as an independent candidate in 1982.  He won four times, first under Bharatiya Janata Party (2003) and the rest consecutively thereafter under the Naga People’s Front party ticket.

Under the erstwhile NPF-led governments, he had served as Parliamentary Secretary in charge of various departments. In 2018, he got elected to the 13th NLA as an MLA.

Before entering active politics, he had served the public in various capacities, including tenure as the Joint Secretary and General Secretary of Yimchungü Tribal Council (YTC), President of Public Forum Pungro Sub-division (1992-2002); and Chairman, Pungro Village Council (1994-2001). He was also the founding member of TMPO/ENPO and served as Social and Cultural Secretary of Yimchungrü Akherü Arihako (YAA).

Late Torechu did his earlier schooling in Pungro before moving to Government High School Tuensang for his secondary education. Thereafter, he graduated from Fazl Ali College, Mokokchung in 1981.

He also served as a teacher in various government schools in Kiphire district from 1975-81.

A sent off service of Late T Torechu was held at Legislatures' home on December 16.

Meanwhile, the Home Department has informed that a State Funeral will be held on December 17, at 11:00 AM at Local Ground, Pungro Town, to pay the last respect and homage to Late Torechu.

Ravi, Rio condole

Nagaland Governor RN Ravi said Late Torechu devoted his entire life for the upliftment of the downtrodden people of Pungro Sub-Division. “A committed leader belonging to one of the most interior region of the state bordering Myammar, Late Torechu brought big transformation in terms of progress and development in the constituency after successfully contesting 2003 general election to the NLA,” the Governor stated in a condolence message.

Nagaland Chief Minister Neiphiu Rio in a condolence message also remembered Late Torechu as a "simple, hardworking and down to earth person who was always in touch with the masses."

“It is indeed a great loss to all of us as we have lost a friend, a brother, a fellow colleague and most importantly a leader whose presence will be dearly missed. The vacuum created by his demise will be difficult to fill it,” the condolence message read.
