Nagaland observes National Sports Day

Nagaland today joined the rest of the country in observing National Sports Day through fitness regime, indigenous games, friendly football and hockey match.

The Directorate of Youth Resources & Sports, Nagaland marked the day through fitness regime, indigenous games and friendly football match at Indira Gandhi Stadium, Kohima.

At Khelo India Centre, Jakhama, demo skills and friendly hockey match also took place.

Extending greetings to all the sportsperson, Nagaland Youth Resources & Sports Advisor, Er Zale Neikha stated “This day aims to create awareness about physical activities, sports, and overall health.”

He lauded the support of coaches, trainees and families towards the upliftment of athletes and sportspersons.

“National Sports Day gives us the perfect opportunity to get our-self interested in the world of sports and thus to adopt a healthy and fit lifestyle,” Er. Neikha stated.

Also wishing all the sports heroes/champions then and now who gave their best thereby honouring and bringing laurels to the country, he conveyed gratitude to the sportspersons of Nagaland who brought many laurels to create a statement of what they can do in sports.

Wishing all the sportspersons, Nagaland’s Youth Resources & Sports Secretary Wezope Kenye said “May this day inspire us all to lead a healthy and active life”.

Meanwhile, Chief Minister Neiphiu Rio extended greetings to the sportspersons of Nagaland on the occasion of National Sports Day.

The National Sports Day is observed on August 29 every year to commemorate the birthday of Indian Hockey Legend Major Dhyan Chand who won medals in the Olympics for India in the years 1928, 1932 and 1936.

Today is the day when tributes are made to all the sportsmen and women of the state for bringing laurels to the state, and a day to encourage about the importance of sports and being physically active in daily life, Rio stated.

Rio stated that Nagas have proven that sports is a part and parcel of life, and sports is taken up seriously as a profession as evident from the recently concluded Nagaland Olympics and Paralympics Games-cum-Inter District Tournaments, where many medals were won, and promising athletes identified.

Wishing all the sportsmen and women of the state a “Happy National Sports Day”, the Chief Minister also urged upon all athletes to persevere higher and stronger.
