Nagaland: PIL alleges alleged unauthorised land allotments in Peren town

High Court Kohima Bench issues notice

Kohima, November 26 (MExN): The Kohima Bench of the Gauhati High Court has issued notice to the State Government in a Public Interest Litigation (PIL) alleging that the Peren district administration allotted government land without obtaining mandatory approval from the State.

The PIL, heard by a Bench comprising Justice Unni Krishnan Nair and Justice Yarenjungla Longkumer, challenges the alleged allotment of government lands in Peren district in violation of a Government order dated November 13, 1978.

The order, issued by the Special Secretary of the Land Revenue Department, requires prior approval of the Nagaland Government before any allotment of government land.

According to the petitioner, the land parcels in question also include areas previously donated by villagers of Peren for the establishment of government facilities.

It was submitted that some of these donated lands were subsequently allotted through settlements carried out by the district administration, prompting the present litigation.

Accordingly, the court issued notice returnable in four weeks to the State respondents as well as private respondents and listed the matter to be taken up again after four weeks.
