Kohima | March 5

The 14th Nagaland Legislative Assembly election results were announced on March 2, but there have been ongoing incidents of post-poll violence in Nagaland, with additional reports surfacing.

On Sunday, two post-poll incidents were reported.

The first incident occurred on Sunday in the Western Angami Assembly Constituency (AC), where supporters of a political party whose candidate lost in the recent elections allegedly beat up nine individuals. The incident took place in the early hours of March 4, when three supporters of an Independent candidate gathered the residents and allegedly beat them up for voting in favor of the NDPP candidate.

While the victims include women, two minor students, and others, one person was seriously injured and required medical care. They were admitted to Bethel Hospital Kohima. It was also reported that the perpetrators had attacked the staff of the PHE department residing in the PHE pump station, Science College, Jotsoma. An FIR regarding this incident has been filed at Sechu (Zubza) Police station.

It is worth mentioning that this constituency is where the Nationalist Democratic Progressive Party's (NDPP) female candidate, Salhoutuonuo Kruse, won by a margin of seven votes against the Independent candidate, Keneizhakho Nakhro.

In the second incident, suspected supporters of a particular candidate under the Longsa Village have shut down the power supply of some villages and kept them in darkness since February 28. The affected villages are Pongitong, Tsungza, Khumtsu, Meriyan, Totsu, and L. Yanthung. These villages fall under the 38 Wokha AC.

A press release from the Media Cell of the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) Wokha alleged that the BJP candidate supporters also cut down the electric posts leading to the villages on March 5. This happened right under the nose of the Longsa Village Council, the party stated.

According to the media cell of NCP Wokha, "this is because the voters from the above six villages have not cast 100% of their votes in favor of their consensus BJP candidate from Longsa village." The party added that such "uncivilized and barbaric actions" should be condemned by all peace-loving people around the world.

The release further claimed that even if the six villages with 1,973 votes in favor of the BJP candidate, the NCP would have comfortably won by a margin of 1,088 votes since the winning margin in favor of the NCP candidate is 3,061 votes. "The matter is placed before the conscience of the public for a fair judgment," it asserted. However, as of the time of filing this report, no FIR has been lodged.

In the recently held general election under 38-Wokha AC, Y Mhonbemo Humtsoe of NCP defeated BJP candidate Renponthung Ezung with a margin of 3,061.
