Nagaland Red Cross vows to uphold humanitarian principles

The Indian Red Cross Society (IRCS) Nagaland State Branch observed its 44th Foundation Day at Red Cross Complex conference hall, Kohima and reaffirmed its commitment to serve the society based on seven fundamental principles of Red Cross.

IRCS Nagaland State Branch was established in 1982 as a recognized state unit of the National society, marking the formal beginning of organised Red Cross work in the state.

Since then, the Nagaland state branch has steadily expanded its presence, growing into a network that includes Red Cross branches or units in all districts of Nagaland.

Former chief minister Lt Vizol was the first chairman of IRCN Nagaland state branch and late Dr K Kire Angami as the first general secretary.

The occasion witnessed launching of the new hearse of IRCS Nagaland state branch, donated by P Paiwang Konyak, Minister for Health & Family Welfare in memory of his father late Langto Angh and mother Among of Shangsa village. This was flagged off by Rev M Nahngom Konyak, Senior Pastor, Konyak Baptist Church, Kohima, who latter pronounced thanksgiving prayer.

‘Through humanity to peace’

IRCS Nagaland state general secretary Akhale V Khamo said that the Nagaland will be celebrating 50th anniversary in 2032. She said that Nagaland state branch has been working closely with IFRC and ICRC in different capacities. “Let us all walk forward on the side of humanity every day, in action,” she said adding “May the spirit of Red Cross and Red Crescent continue to guide us and strengthen us as we continue in the service “Through Humanity to Peace.”

Addressing the gathering, Dr Viu Meru, Founding Member, urged upon the members to uphold the seven fundamental principles of Red Cross. These principles will infuse us in our daily life, he said. He also called upon the members to continue to extend their best service to humanity.

‘We need to reach out to needy people’

Y Kikheto Sema,  Principal Secretary, Environment, Forest & Climate Change, Fisheries & Aquatic Resources and Parliamentary Affairs  stressed on the need to have a proper plan  to help the people in case of any eventuality. “We need to reach out to needy people in terms of health care and other basic requirements,” he said.

Former minister Dr Neikiesalie (Nicky) Kire also spoke on the occasion and urged upon the members to come forward and contribute for the betterment of the society. “We can always help others in a small way, which can bring a big thing for others,” he said.

Khevito T Shohe and members of Chakhesang Baptist Church Minister’s Hill Kohima presented special numbers.

Former minister Zachilhu Ringa Vadeo, Nagaland Legislative Assembly (NLA) former speaker Dr Chotisuh Sazo and Kevisa Kense, IAS (Retd), Chief Information Commissioner Nagaland including several other dignitaries also present on the occasion.

A minute silence was observed in honour of the departed founding members. The programme was chaired by John Kath, finance secretary IRCS Nagaland state branch while vote of thanks was proposed by Dr R Rose, vice chairman IRCS Nagaland state branch. Dr Nganshimeren led mass prayer and benediction.
