A year since the detection of the first COVID-19 cases in the State, Nagaland on May 25, registered 276 new cases which took the tally to 20,535.
On May 25, 2020, the first 3 positive cases were detected from among returnees in Kohima. Since then, the State has witnessed a steady rise in cases over the one-year period, and the situation went from bad to worse with the onset of the second wave in 2021. The rampant rise in infections prompted the government to announce a total lockdown which will be in force till May 31.
Even with the lockdown and restrictions on movement in place, Dimapur continued to top the list of new COVID-19 cases with 119 cases on Tuesday. State capital Kohima accounted for 87 of the new cases and Mokokchung logged 19 new cases while Phek had 17 cases, Kiphire- 14 cases, Tuensang-9, Zunheboto-7, Peren-2 and Mon and Wokha had 1 case each.
The State also reported 161 new recoveries which took the overall recovery number to 14,798. There are 4806 active cases at present, as per the daily COVID-19 bulletin issued by the State Health department.
18 deaths in 24 hours
Meanwhile, the State’s COVID-19 death toll continued to rise, with 18 deaths being reported in a span of 24 hours. This is the highest number of deaths in a single day, as the tally increased from 285 on Monday to 303 on May 25.
Deaths categorized as ‘not COVID related’ amounted to 12, as per the bulletin.
