Nagaland school teachers demand payment of pending salaries

Dimapur, May 11 (MExN): The All Nagaland School Teachers’ Association has cautioned the Government that it may be compelled to ‘resort to democratic means of attaining justice’ if there is no early release of pending salaries.

“The government must understand that the financial difficulty faced by the teachers on account of non-payment of salaries for over two months is an absolute infringement upon the employees’ fundamental rights guaranteed in the Constitution of India,” it stated in a letter addressed to the Nagaland Chief Secretary.

The letter, received here on Wednesday, sought the Chief Secretary’s intervention on the matter. It was appended by ANSTA President, Kasheto Sumi and General Secretary, Pekinto Y Jimo.

Emphasising that the teachers’ livelihood depend on their salaries, the Association pointed out that prior to the current delay in payment of salaries, the teachers had been patiently and silently bearing the brunt of deferred payment of salary for several months too.

“Mention may be made here that the salary, of late has been made no earlier than the 10th of every following month despite the government's standing order which directs the payment of employees' wages before the end of every month or on the 15th day of the following month(sic),” the letter stated.

The ANSTA stated that the teachers, being denied their wages for over two months, have been enduring untold hardships, and as such, urged the government to immediately release all pending salaries. “We believe that the government will take prompt action, failing which may compel the Association to resort to democratic means of attaining justice,” it stated.
