Nagaland teachers lead drive for safer schools

Cross 10K safety course registrations

KOHIMA, October 14 (MExN): In a significant push for disaster preparedness in education, a Nagaland government-led school safety compliance course has surpassed 10,000 teacher registrations.

The School Safety Policy Compliance Course, launched on December 1, 2023, by Chief Minister Neiphiu Rio, is a joint initiative of the Nagaland State Disaster Management Authority (NSDMA), the Department of School Education, and digital education partner NagaEd.
This milestone reflects not just numbers, but the collective commitment of Nagaland’s educators to safeguard children and build safer schools across the state, a statement said.

Dr Johnny Ruangmei, Joint CEO of NSDMA, emphasised the importance of the achievement, stating, “Preparedness is the difference between panic and protection. Reaching 10,000 teacher registrations is a proud moment for Nagaland, because it shows that our schools are moving beyond fear and into readiness. Every trained teacher represents a safer future for our children.”

The programme has seen widespread participation from teachers across the state, including those in remote villages, as well as school principals.

Aonok Aier, Head of Projects & Learning Excellence at NagaEd, noted that the registrations demonstrate the power of collaboration. “This is an essential first step in disaster preparedness at the policy awareness level. More essential steps should follow in order to sustain the momentum of preparedness in the State. Every teacher trained is another school closer to safety,” Aier said.

While the current phase of the course is a cause for celebration, the journey is ongoing. Phase 2 of the School Safety Policy Compliance Course will run until October 31, 2025, and educators are encouraged to complete their certification before the deadline.

The initiative, which includes recognition through School Safety Excellence Awards, aims to embed safety into the core of Nagaland's education system, setting a precedent for other states in India.
The last date for registration and course completion is October 31, 2025.
