Nagaland to go green and organic: Azo

Medziphema, Oct 20 (mexn): The Nagaland government is all set to take up organic farming on an extensive footing by evolving a comprehensive policy, aimed at producing healthy food materials with high nutritive value.

Agriculture minister Kuzholuzo (Azo) Nienu told the Silver Jubilee celebration cum foundation day of School of Agricultural Sciences and Rural Development (SASRD), Nagaland University, Medziphema Campus, that the state government would soon declare Nagaland ‘organic’ viewing the high fertility conditions.

A Nagaland State Organic Board has been constituted under the Chief Minister Neiphiu Rio to oversee the scale of organic farming in the state.

Nienu also pointed out that organic farming aims to preserve and maintain both the environment as well as the eco-system, to encourage and enhance biological systems within the farming system, to promote healthy use of water resources, to maintain soil health and promote conservation of soil and water.

Organic farming, he said, also aims to minimize all forms of pollution, to improve the quality of human life through healthy food as well as maintaining food security for an entire community particularly the rural population.

Beginning with the 10th plan, a conscious decision has been taken by the State Government to direct all developmental agencies towards increasing production, enhancing productivity and generating employment, he added.

It is pertinent to mention that there are over 350 students in SASRD at present.
