Nagaland ULBs issue: Apex Court likely to hear case on July 23

Dimapur, July 18 (MExN): The Supreme Court of India is likely to hear the matter related to urban local bodies (ULBs) elections in Nagaland with women's reservation on July 23.

Earlier, the apex court had fixed the next hearing for July 16, but it could not be taken up by the two-judge bench of Justices Surya Kant and Ujjal Bhuyan.

The case status on the Supreme Court’s website stated: “Tentatively case may be listed on (likely to be listed on) 23-07-2024.”

When the matter was last heard on May 3, the apex court observed that the election schedule for the ULBs had been announced and postponed the matter for hearing after the elections.

With Nagaland holding the civic polls on June 26 and successfully declaring the results on June 29, the Supreme Court is likely to dispose of the civil appeal pending in the court since 2016.

The appeal was converted from a Special Leave to Appeal (Civil) filed in 2012 concerning 33% reservation for women in the ULBs, as well as challenging the Assembly Resolution of September 22, 2012, which exempted the operation of Article 243-T [one-third reservation of seats for women in the ULBs] of Part IX-A of the Constitution of India to the State of Nagaland
