Kohima, April 28 (MExN): The museum of the Department of Geology, Nagaland University (Kohima Campus), received a rare dinosaur fossil and other geological specimens on April 28.
The "significant development” came courtesy of donation of the items by the university’s collection by Supong Ozukum.
According to a press release from the Department, a programme was held to mark the occasion in the presence of Pro Vice-Chancellor, Prof N Venuh, who appreciated the donation and underscored the importance of environmental studies in understanding Earth’s evolutionary history.
Dean of Sciences, Prof Santosh Kumar Singh also acknowledged the contribution, highlighting the role of a museum in reflecting academic identity and supporting future learning and research.
Meanwhile, Prof SK Srivastava provided an insight on dinosaurs, their evolution and eventual extinction, offering a scientific overview of the prehistoric reptiles.
Ozukum, an alumnus of the University at Buffalo, shared the background of the fossil and the motivation behind donating it to the university.
The programme was chaired by Head of Department, Prof Vikoleno Rino, while the vote of thanks was proposed by Research Scholar, Bendangtola Jamir.
The event concluded with optimism that the newly donated specimens will inspire students, enhance research opportunities, and contribute to a deeper understanding of Earth’s past, the release added.
