‘Nagaland vulnerable to natural calamities’

Kohima, Oct 5 (MExN): A one-day sensitization programme on Disaster Risk Management for Nodal Officers of Head of Departments was held at Administrative Training Institute (ATI) on October 3. Altogether 28 Nodal officers from various departments attended the programme. 

Briefing the participants at the inaugural function, K. Semy, Faculty Head of Disaster Management said that disaster is a natural phenomenon which cannot be prevented from taking place.  He revealed that in the vulnerability Atlas of various hazards prepared by the Ministry of Home Affairs, the entire NE including Nagaland is under Zone- V which is highly vulnerable to earthquake and other natural calamities like landslides, flood and fire. On this issue, he further said that the Home Department, Government of Nagaland has taken several initiatives to deal with disaster situations. The Government has constituted Disaster Management Authority with the Chief Minister as the Chairman and ministers of relevant departments as members and a State Steering Committee has been formulated under the Chairmanship of Chief Secretary, including all the HoDs as members. For quick dissemination of information, Control Rooms have been set up in the State capital and district headquarters. Disaster management framework has been adapted to various stakeholders for implementation of Disaster management in the State. District Disaster management committees have been constituted in 11 district headquarters. 

While highlighting the objective, the Faculty Head also said that the knowledge of Disaster Management needs to percolate to all Government set up, educational institutions, NGOs and Civil Societies. He concluded that every Department should play a vital role in their respective field for effective implementation of Disaster Management Plan in the State. 

Group exercise as an integral part of the training programme, all the participants were divided into groups to come up with the sector wise Emergency support function.

F.P Solo, Addl. Director, ATI who was present at the group task presentation expressed his satisfaction of the one-day sensitization programme and said that Disaster Management is not the sole responsibility of the Government but it needs a coordinated effort from all sections of the society.
