The volume of water storage improved further in Nagaland’s sole reservoir on September 16, while the all-India level was at last 10 years average, the latest updates from the Central Water Commission (CWC) informed.

The status of water storage in the Doyang Hydro Electric Plant (HEP) increased from 0.28 billion cubic metres (BCM) on September 9 to 0.30 BCM on September 16. The water level has been increasing gradually during the last four weeks. It was 0.22 BCM on August 26, which increased to 0.25 BCM on September 2, 0.28 BCM on September 9, and 0.30 BCM on September.

In its analysis of the status last week, The Morung Express had reported that the water level may rise further with some locations in the State, particularly the Wokha district, the main catchment area of the Doyang River, receiving improved rainfall after September 8.

The storage, however, is below the corresponding status in 2020 when the level as 0.32 BCM. It is also still -13% departure from the last 10 years average (0.35 BCM) during the same period.

The live capacity at Full Reservoir Level (FRL) of the Doyang HEP is fixed at 0.54 BCM.

Meanwhile, the CWC’s weekly ‘Live storage status of 130 important reservoirs of the country’ bulletins, informed that the water level in the reservoirs across India has nearly reached the last 10 years average of 127.45 BCM on September 16.

Accordingly, the volume of storage in the 130 reservoirs was 127.06 BCM on September 16, up from 116.97 BCM the previous week. Despite this, the level was still below the corresponding period last year when it was 146.97 BCM.

AS of September 16, States having better storage (in %) than last year for corresponding period were Jharkhand, Uttarakhand, Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, Karnataka and Kerala, while those States having lesser storage were Himachal Pradesh, Punjab, Rajasthan, Odisha, West Bengal, Tripura, Nagaland, Gujarat, Maharashtra, Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, AP&TG (Two combined projects in both states) and Tamil Nadu.

According to the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD), during week ending September 17, Wokha district received surplus rainfall of 6%, though other districts in the State has either ’deficient’ or ‘large deficient’ rainfall.  Consequently, the storage level at Doyang HEP might increase further next week.
