Dimapur, May 9 (MExN): The Forest Survey of India and Nagaland’s department of Forest are to undertake extensive mapping of forest cover and creating an inventory of the tree resources in the state. The work involves the use of remote sensing and GIS tools, additional Principal Chief Conservator of Forests M. Lokehwara Rao, IFS informed today.
Nagaland is the first among the North Eastern States to embark on the ambitious project using Remotely Sensed Satellite data, the government informed today.
The Forest Survey of India, Dehradun, which functions under the Ministry of Environment and Forests shall be collaborating with the Forest department of Nagaland and provide Remote Sensing and GIS inputs for estimation and preparation of forest cover maps, inventory of forest and tree resources of Nagaland. The process will enable the department to prepare district-wise management plans as mandated by the 13th Finance Commission Awards related to Forestry Sector, Rao stated in a note received here today.
In this connection, a meeting was held at Hotel Japfu in Kohima on May 8 between officials of the Forest Survey of India and Nagaland Forest department.
“After detailed discussions a tentative work plan was chalked out which entails the whole work to be completed in 18 months. It is worthwhile to note as pointed out by the officials of Forest Survey of India, Nagaland is the first among the North Eastern States to embark upon this sort of an ambitious project in forestry sector using Remotely Sensed Satellite data,” the note added.
