Recognised for ethical beekeeping, sustainable livelihoods, and empowering women
DIMAPUR, JUNE 23 (MExN): Nagaland’s JOME Foods Pvt Ltd has emerged as one of the 12 winners of the prestigious Hindu Kush Himalaya Innovation Challenge for Entrepreneurs (HKH-ICE), recognising its ethical beekeeping initiative as a model for climate resilience and sustainable livelihoods in the Himalayan region.
The challenge, launched by the Global Resilience Partnership (GRP) and the International Centre for Integrated Mountain Development (ICIMOD) with support from the UK’s Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office, aims to empower entrepreneurs from Bhutan, Nepal, Bangladesh (Chittagong Hill Tracts only), and India’s Himalayan states to address the region’s pressing ecological and socioeconomic challenges.
Known as the "Third Pole", the Hindu Kush Himalaya region underpins major river systems crucial to Asia’s food security but faces serious threats from climate change, ecosystem degradation, and water scarcity.
Co-founder Toshienla Jamir of JOME Foods said the company is committed to promoting ethical beekeeping practices that not only improve community resilience but also empower women as key drivers of forest-based climate action.
“Our organisation believes it is time to invest in women for both economic empowerment and environmental sustainability as this will lead to a more sustainable future,” Jamir said.
Headquartered in Nagaland, JOME Foods focuses on integrating bee conservation with market linkages and community-based livelihood generation, aiming to uplift the region economically and ecologically.
As a winner of the HKH-ICE, JOME Foods will receive tailored mentorship, leadership training, resource mobilisation support, and networking opportunities with potential partners to scale their impact in the mountain ecosystems.
