Reiterating his notion that division within Naga society has been created by the people themselves, Dr SC Jamir stated, “There is no point in criticising individuals or groups but let us introspect ourselves on where did we go wrong.” He further made the point of mentioning that the people and the especially the leaders of today do not ‘listen enough,’ but know only how to criticise and blame each other instead.
Jamir made the comments during the 28th Fresher’s day of Tetso College on Friday, as the special guest for the event. Speaking on the theme, “A Tryst with the Future of Nagaland,” the senior Naga leader went on to narrate the Biblical tale of the Tower of Babel, comparing its outcome with that of the Nagas. “In due course of time, the builders of the tower had relied too much on their own strength, becoming proud and as God intervened they started speaking different languages, which has similarly happened in Nagaland today,” he said.
“In the beginning, the leaders of yesteryears had a dream of a united, robust Nagaland, with one accord, one purpose, mind and objective but at present there are multiple factions both in the underground and over-ground who speak different languages,” Jamir added.
These were the biggest challenges that the current generation of youths needed to surmount, he viewed, along with underlying challenges such as tribalism, religious conflict, bigotry and negativism that seek to destroy the foundations of a robust State.
Remarking on the current Naga political issue, Jamir said, “An armed revolution will not achieve the goals,” as political dialogue is paramount towards achieving lasting peace. He also stressed for the need to realise the contemporary realities regarding the geopolitical nature of the Northeast region and advocated for a practical solution.
In addition, Jamir called for the need to stop living in the past and move forward into the future through reinvention, reconstruction, reformation and transformation of Nagaland in a new direction. Calling upon the youths to do so, he urged the gathering to bring change into the society through upliftment of others and themselves in a fair manner.
Earlier in the programme, Principal Dr Hewasa L Khing, challenged the students to practice the vision and mission of the college to empower themselves towards lifelong excellence and to go on creating a positive impact in the world.
She added, “By joining Tetso College, you are joining a community of 2000 plus students. You are also joining a community of dreamers, thinkers and most importantly doers.”
In addition, 4 students have been selected to represent Tetso College at the 2022 International Leading Together event in Chennai in September, which is a joint collaboration with the University of Melbourne and 4 leading institutes in India. From amongst the 4, Gilgal from BA 1st semester Education Hons, is representing the freshers. She also announced that more than 750 students from districts all over Nagaland and neighbouring states have joined Tetso College this year and expressed her excitement to see what the future holds for them.
The Annual Governor PB Acharya-Dr T Ao Sports Scholarship, a scholarship to award students who have excelled in the field of sports, was awarded to Sentitoshi Jamir of BBA VI Semester in the field of basketball and Dzuziengunuo Linyü of BA 3rd Semester(political science) in the field of badminton.
The informal session witnessed a host of events such as Mr & Miss Fresher 2022, dance, songs, and other special performances.
