Kohima, June 21 (MExN): The Northern Angami Students Union (NASU) has submitted a ‘charter of representation’ to the Nagaland education department seeking fee concessions for students.

In the representation addressed to the Principal Director, Department of School Education, the NASU highlighted the predicament faced by the common people because of the COVID-19 induced lockdown in the state. While the student community is now facing an ‘uncertain and unprecedented future’ as schools have been moved to online mode, the lockdown restrictions have severely disrupted the income and finance of the common people who are struggling to make ends meet, it said.

In this context, the NASU cited examples of how several states in India waived off fees for private unaided recognised institutions during the lockdown as well as the Supreme Court of India’s order directing schools in Rajasthan to deduct 15% off the fees in lieu of facilities unutilised by the students and requested the state government to “be sensitive to the predicament faced by the parents in these harsh times,” by waiving off school fees for unaided recognised private institutions.

“The Union while acknowledging the selfless service rendered by the staffs and management of every institution be it aided or unaided establishments, strongly urge the government to pass an order directing all unaided recognised private institutions to waive off certain percent of tuition fees for the unutilised facilities until formal or physical classes commences,” the representation read.

It further requested institutions/school management not to debar students from attending exams or online classes or withhold the results of the examination on account of non-payment of fees, arrears, or outstanding fees.

Institutions/school management were also requested to consider requests made by the parents/wards finding it difficult to remit annual fees due to financial/economic hardships caused by the lockdown.

The NASU is a mandated organisation consisting of 20 constituent units in the Northern Angami region of Kohima district.
