Faculty and students of DGC during the National Science Day held at the college’s Seminar Hall on February 28.
Dimapur/Chümoukedima, March 1 (MExN): National Science Day was observed at Dimapur Government College (DGC) and Patkai Christian College (Autonomous) on February 28, with a focus on women’s participation in science and sustainable development.
At DGC, the Science Club comprising all science departments organised the programme at the Seminar Hall, funded by the Internal Quality Assurance Cell (IQAC). Principal Dr T Tiakaba Jamir said the event would go down in the college’s history as the first major programme organised by the Science Club and noted that members were the first batch of the science stream.
He said the nation observes National Science Day to commemorate the discovery of the Raman Effect by Nobel laureate and Indian physicist C V Raman. Highlighting environmental concerns, he stressed the responsibility of the scientific community in protecting the environment and urged students to dream big and strive for excellence.
Resource person Er Modozho Mathew Dukru, Assistant Professor, Department of Computer Science, spoke on “Women in Science: Catalysing Viksit Bharat,” underscoring women’s role in achieving India’s development goals by 2047. He emphasised bridging gender gaps, particularly in rural areas, and said empowering women in science is vital for inclusive growth and nation-building.
The programme was chaired by Dr Temjennaro Jamir, with Inika P. Chophy delivering the opening prayer. Sumitra Sonar served as rapporteur and Dr H. Atoholi Sema delivered the vote of thanks. A poster competition on “Science and Technology for a Sustainable Future” was also held, with winners receiving certificates.
At Patkai Christian College, the celebration was held at Bundrock Chapel under the same theme. Chief Conservator of Forest (Environment, Biodiversity & Research), Government of Nagaland, Supongnukshi Ao, attended as guest of honour. In his keynote address, he highlighted women’s contributions to research and national development, stressing discipline, resilience and scientific temper.
Academic competitions including quizzes, extempore speeches and model presentations were conducted, with departments of Mathematics, Zoology, Chemistry, Physics and Botany emerging as winners in various categories. The programme concluded with a renewed emphasis on knowledge, innovation and perseverance.
