NBCC passes resolution reaffirming NLTP Act

Dimapur, February 28 (MExN): The Nagaland Baptist Church Council (NBCC) has passed a resolution reaffirming for the Nagaland Liquor Total Prohibition (NLTP) Act, 1989, while calling to combat substance abuse in the state.

NBCC President Rev Achu Chang and General Secretary Rev Dr Mar Pongener in a press release said, Resolution No. 2, adopted on the final day of the 89th Annual Council held at the CBLT Mission Centre in Tuensang, urged the government to ensure the “sincere, consistent, and effective implementation” of the prohibition law.

NBCC also directed its member churches to strengthen substance abuse prevention efforts, focusing on both primary prevention, through awareness and sensitization of the younger generation regarding the harmful consequences of substance abuse, and secondary prevention, by extending care, support, counselling, and rehabilitation services to individuals and families affected by substance abuse.

ABCC pledges support for liquor ban 

In a separate statement, The Angami Baptist Church Council (ABCC) has reaffirmed its commitment and steadfast support for the Nagaland Liquor Total Prohibition (NLTP) Act, 1989, and pledged to strengthen efforts against substance abuse in the state.

At its first Council Meeting of the year held on February 27 at the Mission Centre in Kohima, the ABCC resolved to back the resolution passed during the NBCC 89th Annual Council, ABCC Executive Director, Rev Rachülie Vihienuo and President, Rev Zhabu Terhüjah said in a press release.

Reiterating its commitment, the ABCC stated that it would intensify prevention initiatives through its local churches and the Arukah Ministry, “a ministry under the Men’s Department which has been providing care, support and counseling primarily to alcoholics for over 15 years now.”

Acknowledging the church’s role in social reform, the Council also expressed its readiness to extend any supportive role to the Government, if it so requires, towards the effective implementation of NLTP Act.
