NCD points to flaws in footpath construction in Dimapur

DIMAPUR, AUGUST 6 (MExN): The Naga Council Dimapur (NCD) has written to the Deputy Commissioner Dimapur pointing to poor workmanship and the poor quality of material being used in the construction of footpaths by the Department of Urban Development. “Dimapur is a city where majority of the general public commute on footpaths. Still there are footpaths that are not functional, occupied by vendors, encroachment and in some places footpath conditions pose dangers to pedestrian,” the letter from the NCD President, T Bangerloba said.

With rising vehicular traffic in the city, the NCD urged the government and the concerned department to encourage walking as a public mode of transport by investing in improving the quality of footpaths. “However, the recent footpath work that is being carried out has several flaws in the quality and design. The workmanship is poor and the materials that are being used are of inferior quality,” it claimed. The NCD asked the district administration to take necessary action against the implementing agency i.e. Urban Development Department, which currently carrying out the works. It also urged that as the Planning authority, the district administration and the Dimapur Municipal Council (DMC) should accord priority in creating long term sustainable plan for the city infrastructure such as pedestrian-friendly footpaths.
