Kohima, April 20 (MExN): A community awareness programme was conducted by the National disaster Response Force at Jakhama Community Hall. The NDRF are from the 01 BN NDRF based in Guwahati.
The country has nine battalions in total of which the battalion based in Guwahati is the first.  Speaking to the Morung Express Harbhajan Singh, Deputy Commandant of the battalion said that the NDRF in Guwahati has been formed by different paramilitary forces of which a team was also sent to Japan to help during the rescue operations.
The NDRF has been involved in hundreds of search and rescue missions and have made quite a name for themselves.  The NDRF will continue its community awareness programme till the 30th April in Nagaland, they will work in collaboration with the fire, police and other relevant departments.
The programme in Jakhama included a brief lecture on the various kinds of disasters, relief and management especially related to schools. Saying that in any disaster a school bears the most casualty the Deputy Commandant stressed on the importance of awareness among students and teachers.
Students from Loyola school eagerly volunteered as the NDRF demonstrated ways of rescue and search. During the lecture, it was learnt that schools situated in seismic zones have to develop a school preparedness plans and to form a committee to organize preparedness plan. Responsibilities should be assigned to teachers and students alike to plan evacuations. It is also pertinent to prepare a student release plan whereby school authorities can be informed of responsible people who might be detailed to pick children in case of emergencies.
A safe place may also be located for assembly after evacuation, and escape routes should be direct. Younger children must be evacuated first and congestion in corridors should be avoided.
Another important point to note is the maintenance of record which will show when each child leaves/to whom the child was released and where they were headed to. Facilities should also be made for children to come back to the school in case their homes are destroyed. All records and instructions should be kept in a safe place and available for use. The NDRF also listed the following as essentials in case of an earthquake: first aid, flashlight, water which should be stored (4litres per person for 3days), energy foods, blankets, tents, radio, emergency lights, fire extinguishers, fire blankets etc.  Earlier the same programme was conducted in Khuzama.
