‘NE Business Summit’ in Mumbai

Kolkata, January 20 (Agencies): The Indian Chamber of Commerce (ICC), along with the Ministry of DoNER, Government of India is organizing its annual flagship ‘North-East Business Summit’ in Mumbai between January 21 and 22. The prestigious Summit, now in its 6th year, is the largest trade & investment Conference cum Exposition on India’s North-East region.
Development of the North East is an area which has been accorded topmost priority in ICC’s agenda; the Chamber has been recognised by the Ministry of DoNER as the Nodal Chamber for the North-East. The ICC, over the years, has tirelessly strived to showcase the tremendous economic potential of the NER to domestic and international investors through meaningful, and strategic initiatives. Apart from the previous 5 North-East Business Summits, the Indian Chamber has also organized mega trade & investment shows on the North-East abroad, particularly in South & South-East Asian countries, which, the ICC feels,  can be natural trade partners of the North-East region because of the latter’s strategic location and proximity to these countries. The ICC, along with MDoNER, and the Ministry of Commerce, Govt. of Thailand, organized the “North East Trade & Investment Opportunities Week” in Bangkok in 2007, which was the largest ever Business Delegation from India to Thailand. One-to-one meetings witnessed signing of several MOUs which were later translated into actual investments from Thai companies. Several high-profile Delegation Exchanges with neighbouring countries like Bangladesh, Myanmar & Bhutan to foster trade through the NER have been organized quite frequently by the Chamber over the last few years.
The 2-day mega ‘6th North-East Business Summit’ will address key issues related to the overall socio-economic development of the North-East, which, despite being a region with tremendous economic potential, has not been able to grow as expected, and has literally remained untapped. The Indian Chamber strongly feels that policies and programmes need to be suitably monitored and  implemented for taking the region to a higher growth trajectory, in sync with the NE Vision 2020 document released by the Hon’ble PM, Dr. Manmohan Singh  in 2008, which recommends a structural transformation of the region in terms of development to catch up with the rest of the country with an increasing average growth rate of 12.95 Gross State Domestic Product (GSDP) per annum from the present 7.5 per cent. The Summit will have focused Sessions on strategic areas like : Prospects of Mining in North-East ; Enhancing Infrastructure in the NER ; Agenda North-East – Opportunities & Strategies ; Action Agenda for Agro & Food Processing in the region ; Opportunities in the Tourism & Hospitality sector , etc. The Summit will also have an Exhibition on the North-East region wherein all the States will display their indigenous products, and showcase their comparative advantages to investors. More than 1000 delegates from across the country, and also from neighbouring countries are expected to attend the Summit, which is happening in Mumbai for the second time after 2002, when the 1st Summit happened.
The 6th North-East Business Summit  will witness the coming together of a very large number of top Indian and international Cabinet Ministers, Chief Ministers of the North-Eastern States, Policy Makers, Govt.
