Need to promote Naga indigenous martial arts: Xuivi

Grand Master Israel G Xuivi felicitated at Dimapur Airport

Nagaland’s very on International Taekwondo instructor/Grand Master, Israel G Xuivi, was given a warm reception by members of the Western Sumi Sports Association (WSSA), upon his return back to Nagaland, at Dimapur airport on August 30, following the official award ceremony for induction into the Taekwon-do Hall of Fame held at Jersey City, USA on August 19.

During the event, Xuivi spoke on his elation and gratitude for receiving the award as he had personally never expected to achieve such a feat. “I dedicate this achievement to the people of Nagaland, may it inspire the younger generation more in the years to come,” he said. Stating that, as taekwon-do is an international discipline, formulated through the combination of several techniques; he began taking interest in the sport at the tender age of 2 years.

He also noted of the keen love for the sport and stressed that he did not take it up as a means for monetary gain but at improving himself.    

Sharing on his contribution to the martial arts fraternity, as the founder of Naga Kiti-Do, Naga indigenous martial arts, he commented taking inspiration from the traditional Sumi kick fighting sport known as Aki Kiti.  

Countries such as Korea and Japan are renowned for taekwon-do, judo and karate; he therefore recognised the need to promote Naga Kiti-do to the outside world. As well as being proud of the recognition that the indigenous sport had received from the International community. Besides revealing that he had given a traditional shawl and bestowing the title of Honorary Black-belt of Naga Kiti-do to Gerard Robbins, President of Taekwon-do Hall of Fame.  

It may also be mentioned that, Xuivi is the Deputy Commandant of the 1st NAP Battalion, Chümoukedima and had received the award in the category of Pioneer Taekwon-do Instructor.'  

He is the second person from India to receive this award. The first being, Grand Master Puran Andrew Gurung, the founder of taekwon-do in India and Nepal. 

Shorts speeches were also given by Nikheto Zhimo, President, Sumi Hoho, Shikaho Zhimomi, Western Sumi Hoho and Thimeto Zhimo, GB Ikishe village.
