NEISSR social work trainees enhance skill on Participatory Rural Appraisal

Dimapur, February 7 (MExN): Northeast Institute of Social Sciences and Research (NEISSR) concluded its ten-day rural camp at Thenyizu village, Phek district which was held from January 27 to February 6. A total of 49 students from second semester and two faculty members along with Phek district Peace Channel coordinator participated during the rural camp.

 

 

Rural camp is an integral component of Masters in Social Work (MSW) curriculum, stated a press release received here. The camp is organized with the objective of helping the social work trainees to understand rural realities and village dynamics.

 

 

During the camp, Participatory Rural Appraisal (PRA) and activities such as, household survey and Awareness Program on Family Planning, Women’s Health and Hygiene, awareness on peace building, cleanliness drive, and cultural exchange programme were conducted in the village. The camp focused on facilitating village people in the Social and Resource Mapping of the village spreading awareness. Additionally, it is an exercise to help the trainees to experience group living, sharing and working with fellow trainees.

 

 

The social work trainees of NEISSR have conducted home visitations and Participatory Rural Appraisal (PRA) at Thenyizu Village with the resource person RK John, Asst. Programme Manager DAN, Dimapur as the trainer.

 

 

The trainees were skilled in Participatory Rural Appraisal (PRA) and have successfully completed the social mapping of the village, social resource mapping, seasonal calendar, etc. The trainees also organized a seminar on Family Planning, Women’s Health and Hygiene, with resource persons from Family Planning Association of India (FPAI), Akangkokla Namo, Programme coordinator and Ville Rhetso Counsellor FPI.

 

 

The resource persons spoke on the importance of family planning and the role of parents in upbringing their children and urged the people to stop misinterpreting women’s problems. Meanwhile, clarifying the misconception of menstruation, the resource persons highlighted various health issues and other complications of the like of cervical cancer, which are found to have been prevalent in the rural areas.

 

As a whole the professional social workers have enhanced their knowledge and skill to live in a rural setting with minimum facilities.
